What’s all this about less female performers at mainstream music festivals?

Posted in Uncategorized on April 25th, 2013 by byronkho

Why are there less female performers at major music festivals? Coachella this year offers up 90% male-fronted bands, while the next general music festival I’ll be going to – Firefly, in Delaware – will be offering up 75% male-fronted bands. Pitchfork has similar numbers. The next dance music festival I’m going to, EDC in NY, is even worse: 95% are male-fronted acts. I don’t necessarily have the most well thought-out position here, but I do tend to think that society reinforces most assumptions we have about women in music.

The kids dropping out of school and playing in bands, to Hollywood, are basically all dudes. Unless they’re making a movie about Joan Jett. There are tons more internationally famous male acts than there are female acts, and that includes both bands led by females and bands made up of mostly females. I bring up the distinction because rock, a genre that social scientists have found to appeal more to males over the last few decades, has a great number of female-led bands while there are almost no all-female rock bands. Why is that? Is that a reflection of the mostly male fanbase? Is that merely the label producers prejudices showing? Or is it that there are less female rock musicians, and less female rock musicians willing to band together in all-female groups? Trivia: the first all-female rock album on a major label came out in 1970. David Bowie was to later say of Fanny that “they were extraordinary: they wrote everything, they played like m**f**s, they were just colossal and wonderful…” There was a mystical fake all-girl band called the Carrie Nations in “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls,” a sexploitation movie written by Roger Ebert also in 1970. Between those bands and the Donnas, how many all-female rock groups are there?

Even when there are female-led rock bands, they still tend to appeal to more males than females. Lacuna Coil, Evanescence, Garbage, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc. Where you start to get the audience number differences are when the rock acts start to become more pop-py, reflecting the female lean toward pop and soul music instead of rock – thus, you have Paramore and many more screaming female fans than male ones. I like Paramore, personally, though I think the Donnas rock way harder. Keep in mind that sociological observations regarding gender preferences are more indicative of society’s motivations and prejudices, rather than comments on any one individual’s own preferences.

I don’t say that there aren’t a lot of female rock fans: there are a huge number out there, but %-wise, the statistics still fall to the guys. It’s a little different in EDM, however. EDC has three female acts, including Nervo, Rebecca and Fiona and La Roux. Just 3 out of 81? But the female fans that will show up will be legion; that weird non-representation of the female gender in the artists but over-representation in the fans has to have some interesting sociological and psychological reason behind it. I imagine it has something to do with the industry being a lot more misogynistic, and the music focusing a lot more on sexuality. Rock music tends to be more aggressive and testosterone-filled, while dance music focuses more on movement and mass euphoria. That would tend to improve or reinforce female positive perception of their sexuality, and thus increase the number of female fans. Conversely, that pressure must be killer on the female DJs, who have to be hot sexual items while trying to spin in the DJ booth – not easy. Niki Belucci certainly got experience dealing with that from way before she stepped into a DJ booth. How about other genres? Well, I can’t see any dearth of female musicians or fans in pop, even though many of the greatest bands are never heard on top 40 stations… and so perhaps lack the numbers. Having 10k fans scattered around the world is not as fun as having 1 million fans in one city alone. Soul and R&B? Plenty of female artists that are amazing. They have a hard time making it big in rap and hiphop, as society – like in rock – seems to call those genres a man’s game… but have they heard Jean Grae or k.flay before? I have. Live too.

From personal experience, I know there are a ton of female musicians out there that the festivals could have pulled in… and some have, so plainly it’s just a few festivals that are, er, misbehaving. While I can’t get a major festival to be more fair about gender representation (or get people to decide to like more female bands), I can always adjust my own concertgoing and attitudes. Thankfully, I don’t need to: I see a lot of female artists every year! Not counting the major orchestral and opera concerts and musicals I have seen this year, I’ve seen 15 female or female-led bands out of 40 for a nice respectable 37.5%. Tomorrow, I’m seeing Bess Rogers, Lelia Broussard and Kristen Ford. I’m seeing Beth Hart and Paramore and those female DJs at EDC and Jess Klein. Then The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ellie Goulding, Azealia Banks, Matt & Kim, Alabama Shakes, The Joy Formidable, Krewella, Amanda Palmer & the Grand Theft Orchestra, LP, Dragonette, Haim, Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds, Kopecky Family Band, Selah Sue, Blondfire, Chvrches, Delta Rae, Imaginary Cities, Trails and Ways, Icona Pop, Erykah Badu, Feist, Polica, Best Coast, Beach House, She & Him, Camera Obscura, Sandi Thom, Tegan and Sara, Miranda Lambert, Solange, Beyonce, Emeli Sande and Alunageorge during the summer. That’s a lot of women.

Just helped out with auditions for a Fringe show whose composer worked with Philadelphia Weekly in the past, so pitched a story to the editor and got it accepted. Now, they’ve got a 3000 word advertisement, I mean article, for the show “from a first person perspective” that’s running as the cover article in Philadelphia Weekly a week before the show opens. That’s just nuts. Jeff Barg is composing, Sally Ollove is writing the book (with Shakespeare) and Ben Kamine is directing. Wars & Whores at the Rotunda, Sept 9-11, Philly Fringe. This will be my Fringe show for 2011!

The drink I remember as the Cockroach, not having any other name for the kick in the balls dirty brown concoction I had to slurp down that night: Reuven Bell says it’s the Kho’s Khatastrophe. This needs recreating, but not in a Purple Jesus way (aka one ingredient for color and then mixing every alcohol, antifreeze and paint thinner you can find for volume).

An actual cockroach (the drink), and definitely too pretty to be what I had.

A few months ago, I walked by a house where some 20-ish girl was standing by trying to explain herself to a policeman who was also fielding off worried outbursts from this old man who was saying that his granddaughter was disturbed. She was telling the cop that he was wrong and the old guy stopped her, explaining that he had found her with her mouth around the barrel of a shotgun. She said she was only joking, but the grandfather said that she had tried to kill herself before. I walked on. Too nuts.

She didn’t actually look like Lacey Mosley from Flyleaf. But she was a bit gothy.

Not as nuts as that woman on Market St (also a few months ago). Clearly ill. Looked to be 400 pounds at least, and shaking booty at 830 AM over a steam vent in a shirt (thank goodness) and just a thong, no pants. My eyes bled a little. I came back a few hours later, after church, and saw JUST the thong on the ground near where she had been dancing. I think I screamed.

Had 20 McNuggets (just to try the new sauces, plus that location had the 20 for $4.99 deal) plus a Angus Mushroom for dinner. Talk about worst dinner ever. Was jonesing so badly for Five Guys mushroom-pickles-relish-jalapenos burger and reg fries with white vinegar, but they were closed. Still wanting some, despite being full of questionable chicken, still, 4 hours later.

Hangin at the Corner this weekend for Elise’s goodbye party and we’re talking about some swim club in Bryn Mawr that has an 11 year waiting list. Yes, ELEVEN years. Nuts! And Cliff Lee from the Phillies signs up and immediately gets in. Oh, unfairness. But I have it on good authority that if he doesn’t pull in a World Series, his membership will be revoked and given to me. (And then talked South Africa with Elise and Alex, Rice to Riches with Jessica Waber, theatre with Sara Steinberger. But those parts weren’t nuts, it was off the hook. Bam!)

Just saw this band, Black Dub, with Daniel Lanois, Brian Blade and Trixie Whitley. They are freakin amazing. Trixie has such a powerful voice, and Daniel and the bassist bring in some great harmonies. Plus just awesome groovin’ all around. Watching Daniel and Brian just jam together on this one joint… no idea what it was called, but it was such magic. And they always look like they’re having such fun. Oh, and Daniel is Canadian. Another one! (This counts as madness! Awesome madness!)

Without the Farros. Still good?

Just found out Paramore lost 2 members in a bitter breakup in December. Since half of the songwriting team is now gone, who thinks Paramore will lose its sweeter edge and go more rock? I almost hope they do. I also think it’ll mean more pro songwriters coming in and taking over, and Paramore losing its defining factors and becoming, horrors upon horrors, some sort of drone band by next year, with every single note and lyric of music analyzed and changed by computer algorithms to make it more “appealing.” Madness? Maybe?

Last bit: Jameson’s, double, neat. $20. OWW.

Tiring week.

1. Arcade Fire, Spoon. Amazing company, amazing show. Spoon played all their Transference album, which was good, but I’d have preferred them to ALSO play some of their old stuff. Arcade Fire does actually rock live, and them ending the show with Keep the Car Running and Tunnels blew my mind. I did like the recorded Tunnels better than their live version, but on the other hand, the energy they had was palpable and definitely impressed. The girl did this weird skip dance around the stage every time she had a number, kinda like she didn’t know what to do with herself. Apparently I now have a concert buddy, which is awesome – I need someone to go to more classical shows with anyways, since I’m rediscovering my liking for classical music. And she’s not opposed to bluegrass. I like shows at the Mann Center, I’ve decided.

Speaking of classical, Melanie Laurent playing a classical violinist? Hot. She’s hot. The finale of The Concert is her soloing with the fake Bolshoi Symphony (actually the Budapest Symphony Orchestra with unknown soloist… finding out the info is damn hard for some reason), and it’s a pretty amazing piece. Killer for the violinist, especially.

2. Kadawatha, New Found Glory, Tegan and Sara, Paramore. Aside from annoying preteens, an actually good show. Penn’s Landing, as always. Really liked Kadawatha. They are a Swedish band whose lead singer is a Sri Lankan who has a good rock voice with a nice high range. They got only a little bit of applause, but what can you expect from teens who only cheer if they know the band, not if they’re actually good? New Found Glory is not that great live but they have a shit ton of energy and can pull you in regardless. I finished being like wow, they’re charismatic. And then I realized later that musically, they were eh. Oh well. Tegan and Sara played all their new stuff which is a lot more rock-based and much more produced than their older stuff. I didn’t mind, but I did want to hear some of the older stuff that I latched on to them for to begin with! (Torontonians unite… Arcade Fire, and then Tegan and Sara…) A few people fainted in the front, it was so hot. Tegan stops the whole band in the middle of a song, sprays water on a few people in the front, calls off a fight and points out the faintees, and then starts up again. I think that won them some extra applause. Paramore was great, as expected. Really pleased to hear all songs off the new album, since it’s much more… introspective? They did most of those numbers during an acoustic set in the middle, which was just awesome. Hayley pulled out a cover of Loretta Lynn’s “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)” along with guitarist Josh as backup. Then, the whole band sat together for the acoustic set, which was kinda like seeing them in a small hall as the venue. Intimate, great songs (Misguided Ghosts was killer) and almost perfect… those annoying kids again, cheering THROUGH the music and not actually listening. I was like WTF you’re louder than she is. Some lucky girl was called up, shared the mic with Hayley for the last half of Misery Business (soloing at the climax of the song in the midst of a confetti shower… geez, what a rush) and then got some free shit. Even I was jealous. And a lot of biker types hangin out and rockin to Ignorance and their “harder” songs, that was kinda funny to watch. A lot of lesbians making out. A tidbit: Paramore played at Pontiac Grill their first few times through Philly. Too bad that place is now gone, and hardly any of their current fans will ever realize what it used to be.

Kadawatha playing Agape.

3. Getting real drunk at Drinkers Pub with a couple hot nurses and some cute Cali chick who saved the day with a lighter. They played Home, by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros… that was just mindblowing.

Saudi Arabia and UAE banning Blackberrys because of inability to crack call encryption for monitoring purposes. India also considering ban. Indonesian government instituting online porn ban in 4 days due to pressure from Muslim groups. The leaders of those groups probably have a huge stash of porn in their closet already and figure they’re stocked well enough for the drought while they impose strict moral standards on everyone else. Cousin Louisa seeing Gaga for free at Lollapalooza. And I really wanted to go (not for Gaga), while she gets a free ticket.

if only…

Aeroplane, She&Him, De La Soul…, Phoenix, CHARLOTTE Gainsbourg, Passion Pit, Grizzly Bear OMGZ. Benny Benassi, Girls, Deadmau5, Yann Tiersen, Little Boots! Miike Snow! I might as well just type all the names out for all the good it’ll do me. C’mon, have awesome music festivals a little closer to Philly please.

Let’s pause a second and glory in some Zooey Deschanel goodness. Is that M. Ward playing the douche ignoring her? That’s un-possible.

Oh, why not.

On the radar: Pitchfork (Broken Social Scene, Girls), Lollapalooza (Soundgarden, Strokes, Arcade Fire, X Japan…), Starscape (Pretty Lights), Capital Jazz Fest (Brand New Heavies, Rachelle Farrell, Raphael Saadiq!)

Though I won’t make it out to New Orleans or Perth for these ones… though maybe… the lineups for Essence and Soundwave look freaking amazing.

And guilty secret?
