Playing a gig at World Cafe Live Downstairs on July 16! Thanks to Jeffrey Barg, and looking forward to working with Gary Kurnov, David Kurnov, Jesse R. Tendler, Sarah Levine McClelland, Eric Johnson and Laura Boyce again! We’ll be doing Bard-inspired songs from Love’s Labours Lost: A New Musical (Shakespeare in Central Park 2013); Wars & Whores: The Henry IV Musical (Fringe 2011, WXPN Folk Show, I was in it.); Shakespeare in Clark Park’s The Tempest, whose composer – Sean Hoots, lead singer of Philadelphia folk band Hoots & Hellmouth – will be joining us onstage; plus much more, and we’ll be joined by many more talented actors and musicians. Buy your tickets early!

2007-13 Concert Schedule.

Posted in Personal on March 12th, 2013 by byronkho

Just thought I should keep a running tally of all the shows I’ve seen and will see. The 2012-3 list is most complete but still definitely missing a couple shows. Going back further, there are a LOT of missing shows as I failed to notate what I had seen back then. And I never did the “save all your concert ticket” thing that so many other people do.

Catching up!

Posted in Personal on October 15th, 2011 by byronkho

Emiliana Torrini in Iceland. HOT!

Not enough time spent posting, too much time spent doing. Here’s the recap:

September 17: Paintball. Went out to Jersey to hunt what Rainier Wolfcastle terms “the deadliest game of all.” First time, but I took a few people down with me.

September 23: Helium Comedy Club. J.C.’s friend hosted for some big comedians. Pretty good stuff. Except that waitress was TERRIBLE. Really now.

September 24: Alex’s Housewarming. Nice house. The inside renovations were awesome, and I don’t know how he managed to get the house with the renovations – must be haunted or something. Gotta be a reason for a sweet buy like that.

September 27: First meeting as new member of the Curtis Crescendo Club steering committee. Fun people supporting good music, and from all walks of life in Philly. Had a great time feeling officious with Susy Schultz Keller, Dean Vetsikas, Melissa Page, Anna Schuenemann, Bobby Towcimak, Marija Ugrinich, Steven Ujifusa, Madeline Adams and Elizabeth Racheva, plus a few others. Check it out: it’s official.

Toured the Lenfelt Hall building – broke in a piano in a 3rd floor rehearsal room, saw the amazing orchestra rehearsal room and then saw the 5th floor balcony. Drool. Saw the $300,000 window. Then Yards for Penn Club stuff. Cape of Good Hope: good beer. Met Sam Huntington.

September 30: Opening show for Opera Company of Philadelphia is live simulcast of Carmen from Academy of Music to our spot on the grass by Independence Hall.

October 2: Played a few solos for Brandon Grady’s last service as pastor at a church in the Philly suburbs. Good times. Did one of those Love Feast things where you wash your neighbor’s feet, you know, like Jesus did with his disciples. Used lots of hand sanitizer afterwards.

October 3: First rehearsal at the Orpheus Club. Lots of Dark and Stormys, and some good times filling out the Tenor 2 section. Lots of talented musicians in there.

October 4: Visited the basement of University City High School. Admire the tenacity of high school teachers in the city – yes, that’s you, Jim. Plus, he’s got Finale, I was able to transcribe a few songs from Wars & Whores while I was there. I get arranger credit. Oh, and we have a WORLD CAFE LIVE gig for Wars & Whores on January 14. You totally can buy tickets now.

October 5: Helped record a few arias with Liz Zell at Curtis. Fun stuff. Then dinner/drinks with Jessica Lennick, Zelly and Don Marrazzo (now executive director of Astral Artists).

October 6: Night Market in Chinatown with Julie Yannalfo and Cory Walker. Ran into True Trieu and Chippy. Skipped the beer line ahead of 100 people, WIN. Banana Leaf for dinner and then home, away from massive crowds.

October 9: Apollo e Dafne and Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot. Great performers. Alize Rozsnyai was a great Dafne (after she settled into her voice… a little thin for the first 10 minutes). Also great as Ilia during Idomeneo last season. And she’s only 22! Anna Davidson great as crazy Miss Donnithorne, rejected at the altar and the model for Miss Havisham. Ran into Don and one of the Curtis students, who days later I found to be a great violinist. I initially thought she was some high school student writing a report on the concert.

October 11: Classics & Cocktails at Curtis. Amazing. Some great (though slightly uneven) violin performances. I don’t like Steve Reich that much, his stuff sounds a bit lazy – but I’ve heard the percussionists before, and I know they’re good. Wonderful Boccherini to close out the show. Loved the cello work. Cello does happen to one of my favorite instruments. After the show, we head over to Barclay Prime where we get free drinks and appetizers all night. Fun. Met a bunch of good people, including Anna Schuenemann. Late night dinner at the Wishing Well with Anna and bf, who invite me to join their pool league.

October 12: Pool at Perch Pub. First game as member of new league! Won the first, close on the second and then some crap playing after. It’s all right – practice makes perfect. Nice people.

October 13: Meeting with Sam Huntington, then the TIPS party at G Lounge – where I fail to eat dinner and get a little toasted. A bunch of Cornell, Penn, Columbia peeps. Emilie Feldman is there, and Lorna came over to round out the party. Awesome night! Totally worth the $6.

From the last TIPS at Bleu Martini.

October 14: Priscilla comes into town. Zavino for lunch. Touring post offices. Footloose, Running Scared. Cap off a bottle of that Chardonnay that Mike has a bazillion bottles of.

Posted in Personal on August 7th, 2010 by byronkho

Again, an ambitious list and not necessarily making all (especially if I end up having a show to rehearse). But gigs at Johnny Brenda’s, North Star Bar and WCL are like $10-$15, and for awesome music? That’s cheap entertainment at $5 an hour. Still got a GC to use for the Mann, so gotta find some future show there. As for the Ticketmaster places… sigh, I hate paying their stupid processing fee, but if an artist is good enough, I’ll risk it.

August 7: Keane, Ingrid Michaelson, Fran Healy at the Mann Center.
August 9: Here We Go Magic, Oberhofer, The Powder Kegs at Johnny Brenda’s.
September 4-5: Electric Zoo (Fedde Le Grand, Erol Alkan, Joachim Garraud, Kaskade, Benny Benassi, ATB, Diplo, Armin van Buuren, A-Trak).

Imogen Heap, Janelle Monae, Bilal, Erykah Badu, Sally Seltmann.

Busy week for shows…

1) Imogen Heap. Tickets for $7 over full price of $45ish. Been a long time since I’ve been in Upper Darby, and hadn’t actually ever been to the Tower Theatre yet before that day. Yeah… weird, aint it. I love her voice, and it’s as great live as it is with high quality production. I did like that she tried to improvise a piece. Though she ended up failing, it was a really good start. Another day or two working on it and she could have had a nice track for her next album. She could bring me on as her producer, I could totally whip that into shape…

Imogen does Just For Now. At the actual concert, she conducted the audience, who sang the under-vocalisations while she sang the main melody.

2) Janelle Monae, Bilal and Erykah Badu. Tower again… Janelle is HOT in concert. And she can do her weird dance stuff too. Missed a few of the first pieces, boo… but came in when she was doing one of her slow opera-ish numbers off of ArchAndroid. She really got the crowd going as she finished up with Tightrope. Totally love the mid-piece jam session and dance-off. She didn’t milk it too much but so much more could have been done with it! Bilal was pretty good. For some reason, he got lackluster applause even though he did a great job. Weird. Maybe it was because his song choices were the more experimental and abstract sounding ones? He only had one of his let’s-make-love-like-Barry-White-or-Usher-excuse-me-miss numbers, the rest were the “weird” stuff. Kind of like going to see Foo Fighters and getting some Animal Collective – good, but not what was expected from a Philly R&B singer. Though don’t get me wrong, it was still R&B, just a different kind. Erykah also does the same stuff – let’s call it post-hiphop – but of course everyone knows her stuff. Including that white dude who looked like a girl, kept fluffing his hair and tucking it behind his ear every five seconds, swayed like a black woman at church during gospel hour but without any of the righteous moves and did all this right in the center of my line of sight. Had to look around him to see the stage. What a doofus, even his girlfriend (who was pretty, but much less girly than he was… god knows how that relationship works) was telling him to sit down and just gave up. As for her performance: Erykah really knows how to put on a show, let’s just leave it at that.

Janelle’s Cold War from the Tower.

3) Sally Seltmann. Honestly, I can’t believe there were so few people there. There were like 10 customers there at the beginning of the show. 4 turned out to be jerks who went to the small patio outside because she was being too loud or something. You could see them being exasperated. I was like you’re at World Cafe Live during hours when they have a posted show. Come on! 2 of them waited for Harmony to my Heartbeat (which sounded JUST like the recording, but you could hear her voice quaver sometimes… awesome) and then left. The others looked like they were there already, and were like, oh, a concert? Nice. As far as I could tell, it was only my table and these 2 old people next to us that actually were there to see her. I’m sure she was like WTF from onstage. I had to start the clapping after every song. I was like, show some recognition! She put on a nice show. No effects, just her and her piano (and a drummer and a cellist who did some backup vocals once in a while). Her voice is a little wishy-washy sometimes, but her earnestness comes through, as well as her musicianship and her GREAT songs. A few of them I was like DAMN this is some good shit, I need to hear how the produced version turned out! I talked to her a bit afterwards. She was real nice. I bought her EP, which of course made her really happy (since I don’t think anyone else bought anything), and then she offered to sign my copy. I said yes.

Sally as New Buffalo, doing Emotional Champ. Love this song.
